A surgical procedure used to relieve pain and restore the function and range of motion of a stiffened joint by realigning or reconstructing it.

Two types of arthroplastic surgery exist:

  • Joint resection – a procedure where a portion of the joint bone is removed, creating a gap between the bone and the socket, to improve the range of motion.
  • Interpositional reconstruction – a procedure where the joint is reshaped and a prosthetic disk is added between the two bones that form the joint.
