Dangers of Assumptions

Port Orange Automobile Accident Attorneys

When we are young, we have a pretty simple and slightly naive viewpoint of the world. It is only as we grow that we see the world isn’t quite what we imagined it to be. One of the major changes we are going to notice is the fact that not everyone is a law abiding citizen. Not to say everyone we meet is a criminal, of course, rather that not everyone follows the laws of the road. One of the biggest things we will notice is that an alarming amount of people don’t know how to properly use a turn signal. There are other dangers such as people deciding to pull out into the road, change lanes, or turn without signaling or checking for traffic.

Because of this, an assumption can be extremely dangerous when on the road. You have to be a little bit suspicious of everyone when you are behind the wheel. You can’t assume that everyone is going to drive the right way. It is a good way to get in an accident. Luckily for you, if someone doesn’t signal their intent and causes an accident, it can be easily said that they are at fault. The bad new, however, is that it can still result in you being seriously injured. While it is good to win a court case, it is better to not get injured and go to court in the first place.

The best thing you can do to counteract this is to make sure you are a safe distance from other vehicles. It is typically best to keep at least three seconds between you and the car in front of you. To determine that distance, wait until the vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object like a sign. Count how many seconds it takes you to pass the same object. If it is more than three seconds, you should be a safe distance away from them. This way if you are behind a vehicle that makes a sudden change, you have enough time to either apply the brakes or change lanes without getting in an accident. Given certain conditions such as rain or night time driving, the more space you give other vehicles the better.

As we said before, however, not everyone is going to follow the laws of the road. This includes the idea of keeping three seconds between you and other vehicles. Some people won’t even allow three feet between you and them. While this is annoying and it shouldn’t be your responsibility, it is better to change lanes and let them be impatient somewhere else. It is tempting to go even slower to annoy them or speed up to get rid of them. Both can be equally dangerous and not worth the effort.

No Stranger to Accidents

Port Orange Automobile Accident Attorneys

Port Orange may not seem like a big city, but in many parts, it has the big city traffic. Especially around Dunlawton Ave that runs down the middle of Port Orange and leads to the beach area. While most main roads in Port Orange are typically busy, they don’t compare to Dunlawton that has the Pavilion, Target, Wal-Mart, and plenty of restaurants along the way. It is a tourist town alive with things to do for both locals and tourists alike.  Port Orange is also no stranger to accidents. With so many vehicles driving up and down the roads, you have to expect a few automobile accidents to occur. Especially in the traffic-filled areas like around I-95 and the Pavilion.

Of course, these accidents don’t take away from the overall experience of Port Orange, though they are something that needs to be addressed. Car accidents create even more traffic, cost money, and most importantly, cause injuries. Automobile accidents can range from minor to fatal. They can be simple fender benders all the way to a vehicle rolling. Regardless of how severe the incident is, you have to take care of the damages. Someone is responsible for the accident, and someone has to pay for it. Many times this can be easily decided. Sometimes, however, there are battles to decide who is at fault and who should pay for the damages. This becomes even harder when someone doesn’t have car insurance. If you don’t have uninsured motorist coverage on your insurance, you might be in for a headache.

Having an attorney to help you navigate through the legal procedures not only makes it easier, it helps ensure you are not wrongfully accused of the accident. Even if you believe that it will be easy to prove that you are not at fault, seek the opinion of an attorney as soon as possible. If you are injured, seek medical attention first. Do not agree to anything, sign any papers, or give any statements until you get in touch with an attorney to represent and guide you. Once you give a statement, it is recorded and can not be changed.

If the automobile accident is severe enough, you may not be in the right state of mind to give a statement and might make mistakes. If you try to change this at a later time, it can throw suspicion on your story. The case doesn’t have to be solved the same day. It can wait until you are mentally capable of accurately recalling the events of the accident. If they pressure you to give a statement immediately, remember your rights, don’t give in, and inform them you wish to speak to an attorney first. Having an attorney handy, either by having their phone number in your phone or their card somewhere on your person or in your vehicle.

While this might seem like an inconvenience, it can save you a lot of time, effort, and money in the long run. It always pays to think ahead, and even though no one ever plans on getting in an accident, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. When you head out, have a list of emergency numbers along with your registration and insurance information in your car, like in the glove box. Make sure the list includes the normal law enforcement and firefighter numbers. Also, put a local tow truck number on it and the number of an attorney. These numbers will come in handy if you ever find yourself in an accident. While we can’t help with all of these, for good Port Orange automobile accident attorneys, write down the number (800) 526-4711 to have Rue & Ziffra ready to defend you.
