Attorney Thomas E. Caldwell is board certified in civil trial law, which is the highest level of evaluation by the Florida Bar.  He is also an AV rated lawyer, the highest national peer review rating, and has tried numerous cases to verdict.

Born in Orlando, Florida, Mr. Caldwell received Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration degrees from the University of Kentucky in 1989.  In 1993, he received his law degree with an emphasis in trial practice from the University of Louisville. While in law school, he was the recipient of an award for the top student in the moot court competition and was on the Dean’s list.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Caldwell joined a civil defense firm in the Daytona Beach area.  He litigated and tried cases throughout the State of Florida on behalf of his clients, comprised of various insurance companies and businesses.  In 1995, he joined the law firm of Rue and Ziffra, P.A., and has limited his practice to exclusively those that have been injured by others.  He is a senior partner in the firm and handles complex legal matters including nursing home cases, medical malpractice and automobile accidents, as well as insurance denial which can be governed by ERISA.  Because of his pro bono work, he has received numerous awards through Central Florida Legal Services.

One of his proudest achievements is his son, Benjamin.  Mr. Caldwell is also active in the community and his church.

Top Verdicts and Settlements

Since joining Rue & Ziffra in 1995, Mr. Caldwell has obtained over $42 million on behalf of his clients. With the aid of co-counsel, he settled an aviation lawsuit that resulted in a wrongful death in the amount of $8 million.  In an ERISA suit, Mr. Caldwell represented a client who had lost substantial use of his extremities.  After the client’s insurance company denied the claim, Mr. Caldwell appealed the decision and the case was eventually settled for $549, 750.  His efforts on behalf of the client were recognized on a segment of “Good Morning America.”  After being denied by three attorneys, Mr. Caldwell accepted an automobile accident case that resulted in severe injuries to his client.  The case settled for $192,500.  In two other automobile accident cases, Mr. Caldwell settled the cases for $100,000 and $60,000.
