Joint Pain (Sacroiliac)

Sacroiliac joint pain is discomfort in the area of the low back where the spine meets the pelvis (at the sacroiliac joint). Doctors may be unsure if the pain starts in the joint itself, or in its surrounding bands of tissue that connect one bone to another bone.

Causes
Joint pain in the sacroiliac area may be caused by such factors as twisting or bending this area in a certain way, trauma to the area such as being in an automobile accident, and through osteoarthritis of the joint.

Symptoms
Medium to severe low back pain, inability to stand and walk for a long period of time and stiffness of the lower spine can be symptoms of sacroiliac joint pain.

Treatment Procedures
For this type of joint pain, treatment procedures depend on what is the actual cause of the injury. Doctors many recommend physical therapy techniques to help strengthen the muscles around the sacroiliac joint, as well as limit the patient’s ability to bend or carry heavy objects.
