Ormond Beach

Geographic Location

Ormond Beach is a coastal community in Volusia County, Florida. It is located just north of Holly Hill and Daytona Beach, south of Palm Coast and northeast of DeLand. The city sits adjacent to two main bodies of water, the Intercoastal and the Atlantic Ocean.

Population Statistics

Ormond was recently rated one of the top 100 cities to relocate to by the National Strategy Group, and has also been designated as one of the top 10 places to retire in “Where to Retire” magazine. As you can see by these statistics, many families, young professionals and retirees can all enjoy life in Ormond Beach.

The Birthplace of Speed

In 1903, Ormond Beach became known as the “Birthplace of Speed.” This is because the city’s smooth beach with hard-packed sand proved a successful spot for some of the first automobile racing and speed tournaments in the United States.
Racing on Ormond Beach originally started in 1902, but it wasn’t until the next year that an American won the first speed trial tournament record. This was when the Winton Bullet beat the Old Pirate by two-tenths of a second. After that win, automobile and motorcycle racers traveled from all over the world to race on Ormond Beach. In 1904, the flying mile world record was broken three different times by three different drivers in a 30-minute period. Needless to say, racing records were being set and re-set again all on Ormond Beach.
The legacy that led to Ormond’s longest-lasting automobile land speed record is attributed to twin brothers, F.E. and F.O. Stanley. In 1897, the brothers built their first steam car, the Stanley-Locomobile. By the time racing had begun on Ormond Beach, the brothers wanted to test their car’s speed and durability. After winning some races and making adjustments to the car, the Stanley brothers eventually designed, built and tested what is known as the Stanley Rocket. They brought The Rocket to Ormond Beach in 1906 to participate in the annual speed tournament. Driven by Fred Marriott, the car won the race with a speed of 127.7 mph and held the record for four straight years.
Although racing moved to Indianapolis in 1911 and eventually became the sport we now know as NASCAR, the reputation of both Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach as being the birthplace of racing still stands today.

Reckless Driving Can Cost You: Auto Accidents are Leading Cause of Death for Many

Although the history of both Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach involve epic tales of speed tournaments and automobile racing, it cannot be overlooked how quickly an automobile accident can happen. Especially in Volusia County cities, where the streets are often crowded with tourists during Bike Week and summer vacation, anyone can fall victim to a car crash or motorcycle accident.
On average, more than three million injuries are said to occur from car wrecks every year, with 400,000 lives lost. Statistics also show automobile accident to be a leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 35 in the United States. Severe auto accidents can even place extreme mental, emotional and financial distress on victims and their loved ones.
When an individual has suffered injury from another driver’s carelessness (such as through speeding or driving under the influence) they may suggest help from an attorney and potentially receive financial compensation for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. In addition, family members of individuals fatality injured in an auto accident may also be entitled to damages related to an economic loss or loss of companionship.
In light of all this, the key is to always practice safety when driving. Although there are many safety tips and rules one can follow, below are a few important road rules any driver can use:

  • Always wear your seatbelt! Even in a seemingly “minor” car accident a seatbelt can help save an individual’s life or prevent him from receiving devastating injuries.
  • DO NOT practice distracted driving. While behind the wheel, do not put your life (and the lives of others) in jeopardy by talking, texting or performing any other function on a cell phone. This also applies to performing other activities while driving, such as eating.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Always be aware of what is around your vehicle at all times. This means that you must know where crosswalks and sidewalks are located as well as school crossings and road signs.
  • Obey traffic laws. This may seem like an easy-to-follow rule, but many drivers unknowingly break road rules every day. Remember the driving basics: stop completely at stop signs, stop completely when making a right hand turn at a red light, yield properly when merging into traffic and obey the posted speed limit.
