Kyphosis

A medical condition characterized by a rounding or curve to a person’s spine. A certain degree of normal curve is seen in the spine, however, the abnormal kyphosis is in the thoracic spine (along ribs).

The three main types of kyphosis are:

•Postural kyphosis—the most common abnormal type and is caused by bad posture
•Congenital kyphosis—present at birth
•Scheuermann’s kyphosis—genetic and appears during the teenage years

Symptoms
Kyphosis can cause such symptoms as back pain, curvature of the back, respiratory problems and stiffness in the back.

Treatment Procedures
Depending on the severity of the case an individual has, a doctor may recommend such treatment procedures as surgery (for severe cases), physical therapy, medications and the use of a back brace.
