Dump Trucks Accidents in Florida

The loads that dump trucks carry are very heavy and, as a result, they are regulated by the same federal and state laws and rules that a highway truck has to follow. These rules are called the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Size and Weight Restrictions

The following are the legal limits for trucks in Florida:

  • Length: 75′ overall
  • Overhang: 3′ front and 4′ in rear
  • Weight: GVW 80,000 lbs.
  • Width: 8′ 6″ (on designated highways)
  • Height: 13′ 6″

Time Restrictions

Travel is permitted from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Travel permitted on Saturday and Sunday only if trailer does not exceed 10 feet in width, 13 feet 6 inches in height and 55 feet in length.

Following/Passing

Trucks may not follow another vehicle closer than 300 feet, except when passing.

Convoys

Driving in convoys is forbidden.

Escort Vehicles

Oversized trucks (those over 12 feet wide) are required to travel with an escort vehicle. Escort vehicles should display the words “Oversized Load.”

Truck Driver Requirements

Class A Exam Requirements – To operate trucks or truck combinations weighing 26,001 lbs or more, and towing a vehicle/unit over 10,000 lbs, then a Class A license is needed. The following tests are required:

  • General Knowledge test
  • Combinations vehicle test
  • Air Brakes
  • Pre-Trip
  • Basic Skills
  • CDL Road Test
  • Applicable exams for desired endorsements

Class B Exam Requirements – To operate straight trucks and buses 26,001 lbs or more, then a Class B license is needed. The following tests are required:

  • General Knowledge test
  • Air Brakes (if applicable)
  • Pre-Trip
  • Basic Skills
  • CDL Road Test
  • Applicable exams for desired endorsements
